I have tried following theme to work with dashboard. Others can add their experience.
works with garland.
However the widgets layout does not look nice out of the box.

@ajayg: can you share some screenshots? I did not have a problem with the way it looked out of the box with garland, but maybe I am looking at it another way than you are.
