Error Installing CKK module

Hi, I followed the "Read Me" instructions and uploaded the cck folder into the modules folder on the server just like:
"To install, place the entire cck folder into your modules directory.
Go to administer -> modules and enable the content module and one or
more field type modules."

Only that when I go to administer >> modules, i get the following error message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: module_exists() in /home/playnow/public_html/modules/cck/content.module on line 12

Does anybody have an idea how to fix this???
