Right now, every link field item is rendered as a link in

 foreach ($breadcrumb_links as $breadcrumb_link) {
      $breadcrumbs[]= l($breadcrumb_link['title'], $breadcrumb_link['url']);
    }

It would be nice if non-link items would be displayed as pure strings.
Alternatively it would be nicer if the configured entity display would be used with the configured formatter and perheps other fields.

For the first approach is a patch attached.

Okay, cool! Now we could try to provide the non-linked page title as well throug rules. Sometimes you want the node title as the last item in the breadcrumb, but in combintation with panels it is not necessarily the same. I worked on an action "Append breadcrumb trail title", I will provide a patch later...
