Would be great, assigning to myself to work on during the code sprint tomorrow.

Yeah this would be really cool. I've done some experiments in the past to see if this would be possible but never got as far as actually running a backup during the update process.

Let me know if you were able to make any progress on this. Otherwise I'll be putting it high on my todo list for new features.

Yeah I actually got most of the work done, I just forgot to get the first patch revision uploaded... :/

Please, provide a backport for D6 too. After updating some module, my database got corrupted, somehow. Due to this bug, some data got lost, since my last (scheduled) backup.

It would be extremely handy, if an authorized user could enable the option to automatically backup, whenever the "continue"-button is submitted on '{host}/update.php?op=info'.
IMO such option should be ENabled by default.
The option could be similar to the 'Quick Backup'-subtab (backup from a configurable database to a configurable backup destination using a configurable backup profile).

Would be a very nice addition. Both to save a few clicks/page loads and not forgetting to make the backup.

Was just going to add this feature request. More important reason: Makes it easy for non-tech clients to DIY their Drupal updates. With an automatic update (best), or at least a link on the Module Update page, client/staff won't have to remember to make -- or how-to make -- a backup first.

For the sake of client usability (for which Drupal fairs poorly), I'd make this a priority item.

UPDATE: Oops. Strike that. Text just links to "Learn how..." Mistook the 'put in site maintenance mode' checkbox for the backup. Oh, well, this would be the perfect place for it! A backup checkbox too. ..."Dear Santa..."

I just noticed that backup is prompted when running module updates from the Drupal UI, right after the modules are selected and Update button clicked. (Doesn't trigger when running update.php directly.) So, I guess that it does what I was hoping. Kudos!

But, auto update would be a nice feature one day, as well.
