I'm trying to figure out the best collection of fields to have. It would be nice to be able to disable fields without deleting them since there can be a lot of info to type in for a node type.

If I understand this right, it's about hiding fields on the node/add form (and in display fields) temporarily, I guess it's still valid.

This could be about hiding fields or about being able to disable field modules without losing data. Either way, it's a very old issue and I think we have newer ones that are more clear that cover the same territory.
