All,
So, my personal site is still running 4.4.6. Runs fine, but it really should update it.
I'm assuming the upgrade path is:
1. turn off all optional modules.
2. 4.4 to 4.5 (manually adding a few tables to the database, as directed). Run the update script.
3. 4.5 to 4.6. Run the Update script.
4. update each extra module I was using to the current version.
5. Hope for the best.
Sound right?

Backup? I've got an even better plan...
Ah. of course. I'll do you one better.
I'm doing all this on a test machine. My server is a Dell box. My test machine is an identical Dell box.
I ghosted the server to the test box yesterday. Updated Apache and PHP. Made sure it still worked. Still does.
Then this weekend I'll do the Drupal updates. If they work as expected, I'll just swap the computers.
But point well taken.

It sounds like
you've got everything well under control :)
Many people have done successful upgrades with far less preparation. That is not saying it is guaranteed to work, or that you shouldn't do all that preparation though :)
Good luck!
