I tried asking for support in the modules dev forum but had absolutely no respons so I'll post it here.

I have ported from postnuke to drupal. In postnuke I used the superBB forum module which is based on the Gold-Sonata cyboards. The good thing with that is that I can link strait in to the actual forum, as I only run one, and not just to the folder of the forum. Precisely what my users want.

Sure, I can link strait to the forum in drupal too but I had to add the link in the conf file to do that. Nothing in the administrations supports it.

The issue is the look and functionality of the forum. If I should quote what 99% of my users say, the drupal forum is crap. I don't agree with them per se, as the administration is far better than in postnuke. However I do understand what they are on about. Have a look at this link which leads strait in to a cyboards forum. This is what my users are accustomed to and demand.

My question, as an extreme lowlevel php coder, is the following: How on earth do I go about to get the topic with the comments show up like this?

I hope I do get a respons from the Drupal community and hopefully the people behind the forum and fix the problem or I have to chose between finding another system or pay someone to build the forum I want, which would then not be available as open source.

Cheers

Gold Sonata Cyboards? Hmmm...in Drupal go to admin/comment/configure...there you will see 'Default display mode'...check 'Threaded list- collapsed' and I believe you will have what you are searching for...although a little more customization in the css file will help. I am not a developer but may I offer a friendly suggestion...these people here bust their nuggets to produce this software and answer questions. They do not have to do this. Using the word 'crap' and 'Drupal' in the same sentence is a bad thing and most likely offends the developers...particulary since Drupal is one of the best CMS's you can find...GPL or commercial. Hope this helps.

Ciao,
Larry

Having installed and administrated a couple of forums, I can tell you that people get used to the familiar, and if you change, people will be unhappy -- even if the new offering is "better," even if they like that new format just fine on another site.

Personally I would say the cyboards you want to emulate are hardly the gold standard for forum interfaces. PHP and FUD are two free forum packages that I would prefer as a user and administrator.

But then that's me, and what I am accustomed to.

I agree with you, though, that Drupal's forums are minimalist. However, porting a new forum module into Drupal I imagine would not be easy. Perhaps as PHPtemplate or another engine becomes more robust, being able to change and customize the look and feel of each module will become more a matter of templating than programming.

Of course, with simple use of CSS, you can get Drupal to look and feel like your forum package, and you can just have two systems. If your forum package can use SXIP, then you don't even need to have separate registration systems.
