I'm having some odd permissions issues. I've turned off the TAC module to ensure I'm using the default permissions but things don't seem to be right. For instance, I've given Authenticated User the option to Create Forum Topic. Once I did that they now can see the 'Post New Forum Topic' link in the forums but when they click that link they get an Access Denied you are not authorized to view this page (/?q=node/add/forum/0). What would prevent them from viewing the create new forum topic page?

As a follow up. None of my roles are able to access this page except a role named 'Administrator' which I've given full Access Control to everything. When I make a user an Administrator role user, they can access this page. However, I've created a new role called Test, I've given that role exactly the same Access Control as the Administrator user. When I assign this role to a user, they cannot access the Create New Forum Post page (/?q=node/add/forum/0). I'm very confused. There must be some additional permissions setting somewhere but I'm not sure where it could be - I've unchecked TAC. Other modules that could cause this? Corruption in my access db? HELP!

wow! how the hell you found it!?!? I had the same problem here and removing menu per role module effectively resolved the problem! And i have the same question than you: Wondering if there are other modules that provide this functionality for 5.x? In fact i have this module in all of the 3 website i created with drupal. According to me it should be even included in the core...

With D6, you would not have the need for Menu per Role because the Core indeed checks all the destinations before displaying a menu item. So if you can just switch to D6, you life will be a lot easier.
