We had a mentored contribution sprint discussion at DrupalCon Europe today, and had a lot of great feedback. Special thanks to Ralf for leading us in a card-sorting exercise to help to distill existing and potentially new categories for Drupal.org module projects.
We kept some notes resultant to our card sort in this EtherPad (h/t Drutopia for providing):
https://pad.drutopia.org/p/Project_Category_Card_Sort
Other takeaways from my handwritten notes, not related to categorization necessarily:
- "Utility" and "Other" categories can be a pitfall
- need to balance the UX/UI simple vs. powerful as best we can. ex.g. should we choose one or multiple categories from the project browser frontend? If you choose multiple does it AND or OR?
- keyword search is incredibly important
- good tests for card sorting are Chosen, Lightbox2
- further definitions are key to understanding when something should be tagged
- some way to make "collections" of modules for a particular feature set would be nice... for example "I need..." ... "proximity search" - here are a set of modules that will allow you to achieve that. Someday we could rank these "recipes" so certain ones float to the top. Crossover with "Drupal Recipes" (Bob Snodgrass/Andrew Olson)
- if there were a way to contribute project description changes in code, it would be easier for maintainers to code review and accept - perhaps moving to a Markdown/Yaml option to import your project descriptions?
- Future meetings: we could do a card sort exercise solely based on the existing "Content" category
