Hi all. Kay here - long time volunteer as mentor, spotty volunteer on docs, current drupalladder initiative lead

rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
Ah yes - Drupal Ladder is very much related to this work
Kristen Pol (she/her) 24 days ago
Kristen, Coarsegold, CA, USA, I haven't been to one of these meetings before but I did a bunch of typos fixes over the last few days. I'll check the meeting threads right now. As for outside, sadly it's been 100+ degrees here so we haven't even been walking in the neighborhood. :(

Great! I will sign in there today. Do we need to do some planning... I haven't been watching the mentoring channel to see what the plan is for DrupalCon contribution events...

Contribution events
A contribution event is a get-together for collaborative work on a Drupal project. Contributions to a project can include organizing events, designing a user interface, translating text, writing documentation, reviewing other contributions, finding or verifying bugs and submitting reports, writing code and many other tasks.

There will be some next week, yes
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Hm, I am not seeing there when the contribution events are?
kay_v 24 days ago
I plan on being there, as well, and have the usual ‘first-time contributor sprint’ presentation underway. Need still to connect with mentoring team about specifics of this particular effort, so just fyi atm.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
So Rachel, that seems like a bug. If I go to the DrupalCon page, click on Program > Contribution events, it doesn't tell me when/where/how?
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
So how are new contributors supposed to find the getopensocial page you posted above in this thread? Maybe I'm missing something...
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
it will do. I built the Contributions Room this weekend!
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
We are actually reaching out to individuals that are leading various topics (like this one) first half of this week, then will do a general callout second half of the week
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
OK. Which days will there be contribution events? I don't see that info either. Need to put it on my calendar.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Hm, if I go to https://events.drupal.org/global2020/schedule/all and filter to contribution event, it is showing up empty also. I guess the site is still a work in progress.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Do we need to write up an "event" for people who want to help with the Contributor Guide then?

rachel_norfolk 24 days ago

Carolyn Shannon 24 days ago
fabulous!
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Can I suggest that rather than sending people to the issue list, we send them to those two tasks that we've set up?
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
But you are welcome to adjust the description etc - we can probably get lots more in there - especially, we need a good lik to the right issues we want the group to focus on. I’m happy to be led by you on that list
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
Yes - either way
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
OK. I think the two tasks would be better than any issues we have right now.
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
okay - though we do want to make sure people get recognition for work so we probably want to think about how
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
I can also write up the third task that is harder, and then we can set them up in that order by complexity.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
They will get recognition for editing docs pages on their profile.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
I assume that feeds into Marketplace rankings etc.? I hope so anyway.
Carolyn Shannon 24 days ago
I think so.
Carolyn Shannon 24 days ago
What are our working assumptions for these folks?
they have a d.o. username
Carolyn Shannon 24 days ago
Maybe that’s all they need to get started w/the basics.
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
yes
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
They probably need to be Confirmed, but we can do that if someone is present at the contribution event.
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
yes - I’m able to confirm people - I’m sure you must be, @jhodgdon (she/her)
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Yes, I can definitely confirm people.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Can you add me as someone who can edit the getopensocial thing? I am jhodgdon and have joined the room.
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
done
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Thanks! I don't think I will be joining the video meeting at 4 AM. You're on your own! :)
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
at least the site is telling me it is at 4 AM my time.
kay_v 24 days ago
Rachel, mind also adding me as someone who can edit?
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Hm... When I go to the About page, I don't see how to edit it... I seem to be able to manage members.

jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago

kay_v 24 days ago
actually I’m noted as ‘joined’ there
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Oh, I found the edit button.
kay_v 24 days ago
and fwiw on my profile I nonetheless get ‘No groups found for this user’
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Oh dang. I just spent quite a while editing the About section of the group, and saved. It saved my tags but it did not save the description. :(((((((((
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
that is very disappointing.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
I feel like swearing.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
When I go back into Edit, the edits I made are not there either, it's not just that it took a while to come back.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
@rachel_norfolk are you able to edit?
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
sigh.
rachel_norfolk 24 days ago
Oh. Let me take a look in a bit. Just stepped away from laptop to get some food
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
I am going to try for a smaller edit and see if it works this time.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
ok It's working this time (plus I saved the HTML outside just in case). Will edit some more now.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
OK, I made an edit... take a look and see what you think? https://contrib2020.getopensocial.net/group/new-contributor-guide/about -- cc @Carolyn Shannon those Contribution Area pages still need editing too. :)

I'm trying to read through this thread. There's a lot! I signed up for the getopensocial thing. I'm not familiar with that. I noticed a nitpick on the DrupalCon contribution page:"Please let us know how you can help by filling in the Mentor Spreadsheet of Awesomness."Awesomeness is missing an "e" :)
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
It looks like those of us who might be leaders/mentors of a group on https://contrib2020.getopensocial.net/all-groups are encouraged to create an "Event" that says "I will be available at these hours for mentoring" or something to that effect.
Carolyn Shannon 24 days ago

Can someone (@Carolyn Shannon maybe?) who us not in US/Pacific time zone take a look at https://contrib2020.getopensocial.net/group/new-contributor-guide/events and tell me what time the two events are shown at? I set my time zone to US/Pacific but I am not sure what times the site is showing me, or if I put the time in correctly for my event because the site doesn't seem to say "you are using this time zone" when it displays or asks for dates/times. Somewhat confusing!

Perfect, thanks! So FYI it is showing times for events in the time you have set up in your profile, and when you create an event, it shows you your local time.
Kristen Pol (she/her) 24 days ago
I don't really get the open social site. Am I supposed to sign up for each "group" or each event or ? It says I can "leave group" but I don't remember ever signing up for the group. If I look at group members, I'm not listed. Maybe I'm being dense. Didn't get a lot of sleep. Is it bad UX or just me? :)

I can join other groups so maybe I did join the documentation group and didn't realize it. I think the system is just buggy. I joined one group and then it still shows "Join" as the button. And, it still has the number of members as 1 when there are 2 of us.
Kristen Pol (she/her) 24 days ago
It's just broken. I logged back out and back in. I can't join that group but it shows I'm not a member in other areas. Anyway... have to move onto other things. Maybe it'll fix itself if I go away. :slightly_smiling_face: (edited)
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
I think it signed me up for the group when I made the account, because I went in via that group? Not sure, but somehow I was a member. I haven't tried to join any other groups. But the site does appear to have some bugs -- for instance, it lost one of my edits of the About page for the Contributor Guide group.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Anyway it is probably better than nothing! Not sure if we need people to "join" the groups to contribute anyway, as long as we're clear about how to participate in contributing.
rachel_norfolk 23 days ago
I will take a look - I manually added @jhodgdon (she/her) to make her a manager of the group.
rachel_norfolk 23 days ago
To be honest, joining the group simply allows people to post messages in the group, introducing themselves and looking for tasks to do. Being able to gather people together and talk between them really comes into it’s own when we have 1st time contributors
Kristen Pol (she/her) 23 days ago
Hopefully others can join properly. It seemed like @kay_v might have had the same issue as me where the button shows we are joined but we aren't
rachel_norfolk 23 days ago
I will take a look - might be caching (gotta love that Drupal cache)

again, a little reminder
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
This task is a bit more challenging than the "Add details to a skills page" task.
Carolyn Shannon 24 days ago
Can take a look at that. thanks
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Also, I haven't written it up as a task, but eventually we have a 3rd task to do: go through pages in the existing Getting Involved Guide, figure out what content type or types they belong in, migrate the content, and delete/redirect the pages. That one is the most complex I think. I've started working on some of that content, outside of Skills and those written-up tasks.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
@Carolyn Shannon that would be great!!! Feel free to edit the Task page if there is something that can be improved also.
Kristen Pol (she/her) 24 days ago
I hope they will be redirected from the old pages rather than the old pages being deleted in case there are people with bookmarks or they are coming from external pages with old links
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Yes, we will be deleting and installing redirects.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
That is the last step of the two tasks: to add a note to an issue, after which I will come by and delete/redirect the old pages (and verify the content got migrated).
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
I or someone else with privs.
Kristen Pol (she/her) 24 days ago
Ah, thanks for the clarification. I misunderstood before when I saw "delete/redirect" that content might be deleted. Sounds good.
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
Broken links are not good. :)
jhodgdon (she/her) 24 days ago
I'm editing the task page to make that clearer.

I’ll catch up on the reading that has been mentioned. Count this as raising my hand for better understanding what role the new Contributor’s Guide will play in the actual First-time Contributor’s Sprint presentation and mentoring effort.
