Soooo, @jhodgdon (she/her) did a fab job over the last week turning my fussy requirements for layout into actual code. That is now RTBC so we are back to @drumm, I think?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
You mean I implemented your fab suggestions to improve the layout. :)

Secondly, now that we are looking likely to have a system to put content into, we can start to think about that. I’m lining up space in comms in the next few weeks for us to get volunteers
rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
we will need them!
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
I also made a patch for https://www.drupal.org/project/drupalorg/issues/3115701 so that it will all look like it is in the Community section.
Drupal.org
Community section headers/breadcrumbs could be nicer
Problem/Motivation The Community section on drupal.org is a mess. Some pages also have tab navigation, such as /forum, which provides links to 3 outdated pages. Proposed resolution The solution is to use "unified navigation," the way that the Documentation section does now. What we would like instead:

rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
indeed! super important, that
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
The issue page is so long, I admit I’m struggling to figure out what I can do.
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
Where can I be most helpful?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
@Carolyn Shannon already made a start on some of the content under https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/contribution-areas
Drupal.org
Contribution areas

rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
yes - that’s really useful!!!
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
So, for accessibility for example - I just build out content?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
I think the next step should be to start working on some content for some of the roles we know about, and their related tasks and skills. Alternatively, we have a good list of fairly well written tasks at https://www.drupal.org/contributor-tasks which I think would be very easy to migrate to the new system, so that would be a good Novice-level project to start migrating.

Contributor Tasks
Welcome to the Drupal Community! You're hopefully on this page because you are interested in contributing your time to the Drupal project and the Drupal community, and you don't know how to get started. We thank you for your interest, and hope you find that:

jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
The area content can also be expanded.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Some of those Contributor Task items will need Skills pages to go with them.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
...
rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
Yes - I think setting the expectation through already having good content in there is a good plan
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Maybe we should make an area in the Community issue queue for this... I guess we have one but it is called "Getting Involved" -- can we rename that issue area "Contributor Guide"?
rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
I think I can do that
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
We also already have https://www.drupal.org/project/drupal_org_community/issues/3091381 as a start on listing the content we need.
Drupal.org
Create a list of all roles, skills, responsibilities in the drupal community
Problem/Motivation To create a tool to manage lists of contributor roles in the community, a list with all different roles needs to be define. Proposed resolution Creating a google doc to list all roles, skills, responsibilities. Link to relative working docs Role list (Google spreadsheet)
Oct 31st, 2019
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
To change that issue area, go into Edit for the project, and I think it's in the Issues section.
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
So are we comfortable w the roles and skills in the spreadsheet?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Hm. So I think maybe our focus could be to migrate the content in the existing Getting Invovled guide...
drumm 14 days ago
Glad to see content being written! Having a few real examples should help double check the content type & fields structure.
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
that’s what I was thinking as well, @drumm
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
It is hard to write content for Skills, Tasks, and Roles until we have the content types, but we have written a few on the dev site to validate the fields...
rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
I wonder if I can get help from the new wider CWG group on that?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
It is kind of a pain to copy/paste info from a dev site to d.o, so I would not like to advocate starting content development there (too many fields to make copy/paste easy).
rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
no - definitely wait for live
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
The area pages can be fleshed out now though, as they are not a new content type.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Also content that is "background and reference info" will go into Documentation Page/Guide under https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/background-and-refere... so that can start now...

jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
@drumm is there an easy way to migrate existing content under Getting Involved (presumably book pages) to new Docs guides/pages under that area?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
OK... So it seems like we could use several meta-issues to work on content:
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
a) Write content for the Area pages (we already have a number of sub-issues created, thanks @Carolyn Shannon but they don't have a parent issue about creating content, and we may need more areas)
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
b) Migrate existing pages in Getting Involved that describe tasks to be Task pages, and create missing Skills
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
c) Migrate existing pages in Getting Involved that are background/reference to that section
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
d) Migrate existing pages in Getting Involved that describe roles to be Role pages, and create missing skills
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
e) Write content based on the spreadsheet of roles and skills
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
f) Talk to leaders of Areas and see if they want to add additional roles/tasks/skills
rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
I have altered the tag in the project. These look worth creating under that tag
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Does that make any sense at all to organize that way? It seems like maybe at DrupalCon Contribution Day in July we could get people working on some of the "migrate" issues...
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
Would it be helpful to tag a page with a “this is a role, it goes here”
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Probably would be... adding an actual tag maybe not, but it could be a sentence added to the top of the page?
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
for existing pages we’re migrating, like labeling a box on moving day as to which room it goes into
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
That is a good task to start working on now @Carolyn Shannon -- excellent idea! And I think we could start actually moving the background info if we can figure out the best way to migrate (with a redirect from the old URLs).
rachel_norfolk 14 days ago
I like this!!!!
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
I think that is a separate issue then: go through the existing Getting Involved Guide. Decide whether each page is a Role, Task, Skill, Background, or combination, and put standard sentences at the top.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
This is why we have meetings -- getting ideas!
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
OK I will volunteer to create all of those issues, and move the existing Areas issues to be under the meta-Area issue.
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
So, chunk of text moved from old page to new location, and on the old page something like “See [x link in new place] for a description of the tasks for this activity” or something
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
will ping drumm to figure out the mechanics of migrating the straight docs pages.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
eventually we definitely want to get rid of the existing pages and substitute redirects, so we'll have to pick 1 URL to redirect to (the bulk of the content)
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
A page that describes a zillion roles may need to redirect to the Area page.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
the straight docs pages can probably be migrated as-is to the Docs content types.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
I can make a post in the Documentation g.d.o about the novice task of deciding where content belongs. We already have a page describing the new content types, so that will be helpful.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago

Contributor Guide content types
Most of the content in the Guide is divided up into 4 content types: Contributor Skill, Contributor Task, Contributor Role, and Contributor Reference Information. So, if you have content to add, ask yourself these questions to figure out which content type to use:
Feb 27th
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
Is the “contributor tasks” page worth tackling via creating a bunch of new task types? (https://www.drupal.org/contributor-tasks)
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Yes, definitely!! (I suggested that above too)
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Those are the closest-aligned content to the new content types, I think.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
I am going to suggest on the "figure out what to do with the content" that the person looking at a page suggest a title for each role/skill/task that the page should become.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
OK, I will create those issues today and post links in a new thread, so that people can edit the issue summaries before we set folks loose on doing the tasks. The actual "migrate" and "create" issues need to be postponed anyway.
drumm 14 days ago
Probably not for automated. I’m assuming there will be some amount of chopping things up into fields/etc. The time that could be spent on making the migration tooling for documentation guides/pages work for these new content types is probably in the same range as sitting down and copy/pasting.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
I was thinking only automated for the pages that will become Documentation Guide/Page content, which have no special fields?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
I mean taking content that is currently Book content and migrating to Documentation content.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
@drumm I totally agree making a migrate tool with fields is not worth the time. Needs human intervention/thought.
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
ok. I still don’t know what to do, unfortunately. Sorry if I’m being obtuse. Is there anything I can do at this point, or am I waiting?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Wait a few hours. Or, see if any of the Area content issues can be done now?
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
ok will do
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
@drumm example of section that can be migrated to docs would be the pages under https://www.drupal.org/contributor-tasks/reference
Drupal.org
Reference information for New contributor tasks
This section lists topics that are referenced in the documentation for New contributor tasks.

jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
OK, I've created a bunch of spin-off issues about creating the content for the Contributor Guide. And the main issue now is just to create the content types, not the content itself. You can see the list of new issues on the sidebar of https://www.drupal.org/project/drupalorg/issues/3089403 under related, referenced by, child, etc.

[Meta] Create content for Contributor Area sections
Once #3089403: Create content types for a new Getting Involved section is deployed, we need to create content for all of the Contribution Areas. For each area that is identified, the tasks are: Take content from the existing section on /community if there is one, and if not, give a similar overview of what happens in this contribution area. Put it into a new page under Contribution Areas.

@Carolyn Shannon would you be willing (if you have time) to test that task out on the Decide on Disposition issue, to see if it makes sense and if someone not familiar with what we've been up to could figure it out?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Also I think that is the next task to be done that can actually be done now. :)
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
Contribution areas - should there be one for events?
Carolyn Shannon 14 days ago
Working through the Decide on Disposition issue, I’m wondering if we should mostly have the Contributor Areas nailed down, so the list doesn’t get too scattered?
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Possibly... There are definitely some pages under Getting Involved Guide that are Contribution Areas that we may not have thought about. Also I think of the Decide on Disposition as the first step -- the person actually migrating a certain page can make different choices if necessary.
jhodgdon (she/her) 14 days ago
Hm. Maybe we should say if you find a new contribution area that we don't already have a page for, add a comment on https://www.drupal.org/project/drupal_org_community/issues/3137918 -- would that be a good idea?
