I am on Drupal 5.7. I can allow a role for Anonymous visitors to access the site wide contact form. I thought to have read here in the forums #189785 that this was a problem, but not anymore since it's been patched. Nevertheless I get a warning that anonymous users have no access. Have I misunderstood something?
I am not used to patching but the abovementioned patch I cannot find back in the Contact module. Has it not been done yet? For what reason?

i just reread the issue you posted-- its not about letting anonymous users use the contact form it's about the error messages generated if they do. Anonymous users are not allowed to use the form.
EDIT: see http://drupal.org/node/58224 for progress of including this feature in D7 core and some options for handling it in 5 & 6.
