Installing Video Embed Media 8.x-2.x-dev on Drupal 8.6.16 gave the following error today:
PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined method Drupal\Core\File\FileSystem::prepareDirectory() in /modules/contrib/video_embed_field/modules/video_embed_media/video_embed_media.install on line 19
The method Drupal/Core/File/FileSystem::prepareDirectory() is unavailable in 8.6 and was introduced in Drupal 8.7. Getting the module ready for Drupal 9 is important, but it should be noted that the dev branch is no longer compatible with Drupal 8.6. This could simply be noted on the main module web page, or the json or yml files could be edited to show that VEF/VEM 8.x-2.x-dev conflicts with drupal/drupal or drupal/core versions below 8.7.0.
We can use 8.x-2.1 instead, but in the past we were using the dev version to get the most recent bug fixes as they were implemented, and I suspect we weren't the only ones doing this. Thanks in advance for all your help!

sam152 commentedHm, I didn't realise people who would be updating to the dev version might still be on 8.6, but you're right it should be explicitly specified.

hunterbuchanan commented@Sam152 Yeah I know it doesn't seem intuitive. Usually we'd be updating to the latest minor release soon after it comes out, but in this case our infrastructure is still mostly PHP 5, so we can't spin up new sites on Drupal 8.7. So we'll stick with Core 8.6 and VEF 2.1 for now.
Thanks!
