Problem/Motivation
The intent of this issue is to help the maintainer(s) coordinate community efforts in the creation of a stable release. Community involvement is only intended as a suggestion; it is up to maintainers to ultimately decide the creation of, and what goes into, a stable release. If you are not interested in using this issue, please mark the issue as Fixed or Closed (works as designed).
As of the creation of this issue, this project presently does not have a stable release compatible with Drupal 9+. There are many benefits to publishing a stable release for a module.

dhope commentedI need the autocomplete to work out of the box:
Linkit does not autocomplete when crosslinking

chr.fritschCould we get a new beta in the meantime, because of the hard breakage with media in 8.7?

wim leersI'd like to also nominate #3232190: CKEditor 5 readiness — this will be crucial in helping the community transition to CKEditor 5 in Drupal 9.4 and 10!

smustgrave commentedQuestion is linkit still maintained? Just noticed a high issue count that's all

cedeweyI've updated the roadmap based on the stated priorities of anon and some of the others in the comments. I also added some issues in the Good-to-fix section that are marked as ready for review or reviewed and tested by the community.
anon and johnwebdev, let me know if you'd like help with testing and project management. I might be able to make time for that if that would be helpful in moving the project to a stable release.

anybodyCould someone with the appropriate knowledge perhaps add a note about the difference between 8.x-5.x and 6.x and which version to use for Drupal 9 currently?
I couldn't find that information yet and I think many potential users will have that question in mind.
That would be great, thanks :)

mark_fullmerGiven recent release of 6.x versions of the Linkit module, which provide Drupal 10 compatibility and CKEditor 5 compatibility, the 5.x branch should now be considered no longer under active development.
I'm working through issues tagged with the 5.x branch to determine whether they also pertain to 6.x.
For a more comprehensive overview of what is included in 6.x, folks can review #3345480: LinkIt Release Roadmap and Issue Prioritization.
I'll go ahead and mark this issue as outdated. Thanks everyone!
