Proposed resolution
I propose the following “I want heading” to be added to /community:
Add the content you want to be added to the website, according to the format described below. You should refer to the Content Guidelines for Documentation for language style and #3003061: [META] Description of page layout and requirements for headings for a wider understanding of final layout.
I want to help or mentor others contributing to the Drupal Project
Members of the Drupal community who want to contribute their time to improving the software or documentation are sometimes overwhelmed by trying to figure out how to get started. If you have some experience contributing, you can help others get started by becoming a mentor, either on-line or in person.
The following groups are actively engaged in this area:
- Collaboration on how to improve as a mentor happens in the Mentoring group.
- On-line mentoring often happens in instant messaging tools, such as Slack (sign up, then join channel(s) #contribute or #documentation to mentor others) and DrupalChat.me (sign up, then join channel(s) #general to mentor others). Both Slack and DrupalChat.me also have #mentoring channels, for discussions between mentors about mentoring.
- You can find local, regional, and international Drupal events at https://drupical.com -- many of them have contribution events where you can mentor people new to contributing.
Drupal documentation is constantly evolving. You can read about this activity at:

jhodgdonUpdating to current standard template first; then I'm going to write a first draft...
jhodgdonFirst draft for this section, thoughts?
jhodgdonTypo
Comment #5
bramdriesenOnly "the drupal project" as in Drupal core? or does this also cover contrib :)
jhodgdonShould be the entire Drupal project, which includes Core and Contrib.
rachel_norfolkI've asked the Core Mentoring Team to weigh in on this and they are going to chat about it at their next meeting. I'm inclined to suggest that, while we want people to help across the project, mentoring has traditionally focussed on core as it tends to have a more predictable environment for learning
Comment #8
jhodgdonI think someone who wants to mentor others should feel free to mentor for core or contrib. But it is definitely true that our established mentoring program focuses on Core currently.
Is this discussion, however, something that will have an impact on the text in this section, or are we just chatting about the merits of the current mentoring program (which is out of scope for this issue)?
rachel_norfolkWell, we need to send people *somewhere* and the people are around core.

mradcliffeFinally coming back to this issue.
The first bullet point here is a link-only. I think we should expand this to a sentence. The intent for this bullet point is to guide people who want to contribute and help mentor each other in discussing how we mentor, I think?
So maybe
> Collaboration on how to improve as a mentor happens as part of the Mentoring group on groups.drupal.org, the Mentoring project on drupal.org.
We also mentor each other in #mentoring. That might be more appropriate in a revised first bullet, but then this one might look weird to mention On-line mentoring in Slack/DrupalChat twice?
A fourth bullet point may point to mentoring via other channels that we may not consider as "mentoring" such as the Community Forums, Drupal Answers, Google+ group, drupal.org contrib projects (such as D&I contrib. team). Or maybe there's a better way to stress the importance of organic mentoring and not really something to explicitly list?
jhodgdonGreat points! The only one I'm unsure of is the proposed 4th bullet point... This is about mentoring folks who want to contribute, and I think we should stress established mentoring channels for contributors. I see the Forums and Drupal Answers as more of a place that people wanting to provide support to other Drupal users would go, rather than people who want to mentor contributors (and I think we have a separate section for that)?
I'm not sure about contrib projects, but that would certainly be a good thing to mention. Are there some projects out there that have established mentoring channels? If so, let's specifically mention those. Or they can be added later, if they develop or identify themselves.
Meanwhile, how about this revision of the first two bullet points?
rachel_norfolkStrictly speaking, mentoring should happen in #contibute, not #mentoring (that should be reserved for talk /about/ mentoring efforts.
jhodgdonRight, but this issue is about people who want to mentor others, so it should talk about #mentoring?
ekl1773I think the draft in the issue summary is good, but there's now a /community page for core mentoring that's a bit more up to date than the groups.d.o page, if a bit less general. https://www.drupal.org/community/mentoring
Could we replace the groups link with a link to that? So maybe:
Collaboration on how to improve as a mentor happens as part of the Core Mentoring group https://www.drupal.org/community/mentoring
Agreed with jhodgdon that this is about becoming a mentor, and pointing to people for the resources to learn about that role. Those resources will say things about "mentoring should happen in #contribute, at events, and organically between contributors" or something like that. Just need to get folks started!
This would be nice to have set up, thank you jhodgdon!
rachel_norfolkLoving it! Can you update the IS how you would like it, Elli, and I will add it to the page.
ekl1773Updated the issue summary as mentioned above.
Just a small change there, that should do the trick to help folks find their way. Thanks @rachel_norfolk

bramdriesenChanges look great, but just noticed this sentence (not changed):
This sounds a bit vague to me, what's a work day? Is it a day you go to work and can contribute? In that case it's irrelevant to Drupal events. Or does it mean like a contribution day/sprint day?
ekl1773Maybe we can just shorten that to "contribution events" generally. Updated.
bramdriesenYeah good one :) looks ok to me.

rachel_norfolkAdded to the main community page - thank you everyone!
