I haven’t played with Drupal in a long time so I’m hoping I don’t ask too many stupid question.

I’ve been asked to create a new web site for a local sports organization and I thought drupal would be perfect for this. We have discussed what kind of content it should contain and it’s now time to create a first prototype to show people and see what people say. Before I start creating a protype I would like to check with those of you who have more experience if my ideas looks sensible or if I should do something different.

At first the content should be

Information pages, typically “Here is what we do”, “What is XXX”
Invitations to events/competitions
News items “Don’t forget XXX”, “We are looking for someone who ...”, “X won Y”
Stories - typically what happened at different events/competitions - longer texts
Information for different sub-groups within the organization
All of the items above will contain both text and photos (and maybe embedded videos from YouTube).

Later we have been discussing to add:

Forums
Photo gallery
Possible custom pages/forms for handling different tasks within the organizations
We have also discussed the actual layout but haven’t come much further than the front page and general site layout. The front page should contain a static page with information about the organization, navigation links, some blocks with ads from sponsors, and a news block (a list with title/links for the latest news items). If something important/special happens I would like to be able to add a block above the normal content with a short text and link to a page with more information.

My idea was use the page type for the information pages.
Then use the story type for invitations & stories

But I’m unsure how to handle news items (a blog? story? - does it matter?), and how to organize information pages for sub-groups (I can see that there will be several pages for each group).

I’m also interested in suggestions for how to handle photos, should I let drupal handle the photos (module suggestion) or should I use a service like Flickr or Ipernity? Or is it better to integrate Gallery 2? (at the moment I’m not sure what kind of ISP account the organization have and I don’t know how much disk space etc they have)?

Sorry if these are stupid questions but I’m trying to avoid

Gallery script is defunct don't use it.

news items = create a news content type

grouping items can be done with taxonomy

There are preconfigured professional Drupal products that already do what you want, or more, out of the box.

http://demo.morethanthemes.com/sportsplus/default/

As an example the morethanthemes Sports+ product is literally more than just a theme. It is more like a distribution that comes with custom content types, custom views, and all sorts of features already implemented.

I'm a morethanthemes customer. No other relationship with them. I recently purchased their complete product bundle during their halloween sale. It paid for its value in minutes. It is possible to learn more about how to maximize using Drupal by studying the internals of their products than one might learn in months or a year trying to learn Drupal on one's own.
