I noticed that a requirement for both Drupal 5 and Drupal 6 is: PHP v5.2 or higher.
My provider has 5.0.5 installed. Not knowing the essential differences between PHP 5.0.5 and PHP 5.2, Drupal-wise, I wondered whether this will really be a showstopper for me to use Drupal? If so, we will be looking for another provider ofcourse.

No, PHP 5.2 is not a requirement. PHP 5.0 will do fine.

PHP 5.2 or higher will be a requirement for Drupal 7.
No, but ...
It might be an indication that your provider makes no attempts to keep things updated. Later you might end up needing to do things like requesting to be moved to a "new server" as they follow the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it, even if there are security holes there"
PHP 5.0.5 is almost three years old at this point. I would consider that an ominous sign.
