Being able to specify the comment field, would give site builders the ability to potentially use WYSIWYG editors.

This would also make the Workflow comment text area a viable replacement for the Reply module in combination with Workflow as an example.

Yeah, that's an old wish..

The comment field could be changed to a 'real' comment area.

Are you yourself ready to take up that task? IF not, you can still try. It requires som php and learning the FORM API.

I'm strictly a site builder sadly, so my PHP skills are extremely lacking. The primary reason for adding all of the feature requests, is to have placeholders prior to looking for a freelancer via UpWork that could potentially take up this task.

We are working on an intranet portal at the company I work for and Workflow is an important piece of the puzzle.

i was trying to use the Mentions module so that in a Workflow comment field (available on a view) while writing comment on a state , users can be mentioned.

The Mentions module need text format to work . So allowing customizing comment field will really help

Is any update for Drupal 8 I am using workflow content moderation from drupal core. I need to change the field textfield to textarea https://prnt.sc/1vt4x9p please guide me how can i change that.

It seems you are confusing core's 'workflows' and this module 'workflow'.
They cannot be ccombined since both use the technical name 'workflow'.
The snapshot you provide is not from this module.
