In my superadmin account, there is a menu tab called "Personal Files". I don't remember seeing this tab before.

The only think that shows behind that tab is a white box withe this in it:
Directory error! - files/u1

Any idea what this is? I do need to upgrad to lates 5.7, I am currently using 5.3. The site is about 2 years old.

you should be updated to 5.7 for security purposes if nothing else. As it stands now you are vulnerable to publicly known securiity exploits.

that aside, the problem you are having isn't related to a update. What you see there is from a contrib module that handles files. Which one ? I don't know off hand but core doesn't create a folder per user in the files directory.

maybe IMCE.module maybe webfile.module, there are multiple file handling modules these days.

lastly, and considering your core is 4 releases behind, you should insure you are running the latest releases of all contriv modules that have been patched in the past 2 years. There've been quite a few of them. Protecting yourself now saves you irrepairable damage to your site if its found by someone with malicious tendencies or desires.
