Spin off from #2407801: Views generic field handler does not work with base fields

That issue formalized a bit the notion of "runtime EntityDisplays for arbitrary display settings", using a special '_custom' view mode / form mode (EntityDisplayBase::CUSTOM_MODE).

That is the mode an EntityDisplay gets if no explicit mode is passed in its __construct().

- We might want to ensure Field UI never displays an edit screen for these
- We might want to ensure these are never saved into config

Hi and thank you very much for creating this issue!
Can you tell if this may have the side effect with layout_builder enabled, which is described here: #3018654: Fences seems to be ignored by Layout Builder?
