If you call this function to get the lists from Mailchimp, it does not check the API response before calling methods on the expected response object. You wind up with fatal PHP errors of the likes of "Mailchimp Error: API Key cannot be blank." and "calling method on a non object".

It would be nice to put some checks in place instead of go WSOD.

Thanks for the report. This is just one place where WSODs were potentially occurring due to the same issue. I've committed changes so an exception is thrown and caught when the Mailchimp library object isn't available. It'll log a message in Watchdog.
