I often see people posting to a thread on drupal.org in order to "subscribe" to it, which presumably means they expect to receive an email notification when new posts are added to the thread.
I have never received an email notification when posts were added to threads I've posted in. Am I missing something? Is there some setting I need to change so I get notified by email? (I couldn't find one in My Account.) I have no problem receiving Drupal Newsletters and email sent via the contact form.
Thanks!

No
Posting to a thread in the d.o. forums makes that thread accessible in the tracker.

This is the only e-mail subscription mechanism that I know about -- but, hey, there very well could be others. AFAIK, this only works with project issue queues.
It could also be that when people post "subscribe" they are doing so not only to receive e-mail notifications of comments, but to have new comments and posts on the thread show up in their tracker (Recent posts), My issues, and other similar lists.

...I guess I just misunderstood "subscribe" :)
