How unfortunate. The author doesn't seem to be active at this time.

Should we unpublish the project?

Well it's used by virtually no one, and it's breaking the rules in d.o.. Maybe unpublishing it will make someone want to take maintainership of it.

Actually, ownership of that module changed earlier this year to jthorson who is an active community member (though he doesn't seem to have done anything with it yet). Maybe just let him know about this issue?

Thanks for the heads up.

I took over the namespace for the 'Sports Club Management' module, which leverages this module as a dependency. However, my interest was in the namespace, as opposed to the existing code ... so I didn't apply to take over the dependencies as well.

As such, I don't have commit access into the 'Club Management' module itself ... but given that I've assumed the child module, I'd be willing to take this one under the same status (minimally maintained, no current development) and swap out the icons for something compatible with Drupal's licensing policy.
