i know it seems like a stupid question!? but our organisation is keen to have a content managed site developed and has had contribute recommended.

i have been pushing for an open source solution, especially Drupal but so far others seem to like the interface of contribute and need some concrete disadvantages of contribute compared to drupal to think about changing their mind.

can you all help me compile a list?

thanks

Contribute is great if all your looking for is simple content management for a simple site. It's desktop software, so editors must be at computer with the software that is set up to manage the site. It has fairly nice WYSIWYG editor and spell-check. Your content is stored in HTML files (generally not very easy to port to another system).

Drupal is also just as great, it is web-based, your editors just need a browser to manage content. There are several WYSIWYG options, but inserting images into pages could be better, and I am not aware that a spell-check module currently exists. Your content is stored in a database (easier to port to another system later)

Wikipedia outlines some pros and cons as well (I know "wikiality" but...)

I imagine set-up time would be similar in terms of applying your look and feel. With Drupal, this is done with Drupal templates and css files, with Contribute you use Dreamweaver templates and css files. You will need to hire a developer with the proper skill-set in either case.

So for a simple web site, (not considering the portability issue) it is really a toss up. I would go with a developer I liked and trusted and will be around later when you have questions and issues.

But, if you need anything "dynamic" such as
- password protected content
- site search
- discussion forums
- calendars that update automatically
- online surveys
- store front
etc.

These features already exist with Drupal (and many, many, more) To set these features up does take some time, but with Drupal you are talking about hours, with Contribute (- Dreamweaver), you are talking days (and possibly many days).

Do these need to be separate? Is there any way of using both cooperatively?

Drupal can manage the whole thing for you.
