I'm applying to a Communications Manager position that requests familiarity with Drupal. I have some experience with web content but none with Drupal, and I'd like to have enough training under my belt to at least be able to know what I'm talking about in an interview.

Of course, having done my research, I'm now very interested in running my own website through Drupal, so all of this training will eventually be hands-on, but for now I need a sort of down-and-dirty, overall beginner's course to catch me up on the basics. Obviously Tom Geller's training would fit the bill quite nicely, except that I'm absolutely dirt-poor (and have just too much of a conscience to torrent it for free). As an Americorps, every paycheck is absurdly hand-to-mouth and I stretch pennies to pay bills. I can't even afford to fix my turn signal! So paying for a tutorial that may not even result in a job is out of the question for me.

Long story short- does anyone know of a good general Drupal beginner's course that can cover the basics in a relatively short time frame (I'd be willing to dedicate a full workday to this) and is (legally) free?

Thanks in advance!

-Tom

Tom-

though not exactly a tutorial, recorded sessions from previous Drupal conferences also provide great introduction to beginner and intermediate topics when working with drupal.
a number of recordings are at http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=drupal

Sorry, but no, I don't know of anything that is good, short and free. Like most things, you can only get 2 out of 3.

-Good, short, NOT free: Tom Geller
-Good, NOT short, free: Drupal Documentation
-NOT Good, short, free: most write-ups on the web and/or on forums

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I wish there was an "easy" way here. But best of luck.

Drupal is one of the best Content Management Systems (CMS). It is written in PHP and requires a MySQL database. Its basic installation can be easily turned into many different types of web sites - from simple web logs to large online communities.

I would suggest this website for drupal hosting: http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/drupal-tutorial/

Thanks for this, it's always great to save time and learn with tutorials.
I came from the school of hard knocks and don't want to go down that road again...
