What Drupal version are you using?
First things first: are you using Drupal 4.0.0 or Drupal CVS? (The forum module has been rewritten recently.)
Version 4.0.0
Version 4.0.0 - I've heard people are having great luck with the CVS version tho, and I may just go ahead and download it...
Is it a fairly simple upgrade?
It is easy
The installation procedure is similar to that of Drupal 4.0.0. Drupal CVS is especially interesting if you plan using the forum module. That aside, we plan rolling a new release soon; things are getting really stable so it should not blow up in your face.
As for creating a new Drupal 4.0.0 forum topic, just click "create new forum"? Such link should be in your personal information block when the forum module is enabled.
CVS'd :)
Yes indeed I did update - there are some nice new features. I will work with the forum thing now, I like the idea of containers...
So now that I've upgraded, the "Create new forum" link is gone
Where would I find it?
forum, no forum 'index' page.
I've installed drupal rc-1, works fine, nice work
However forums does not seem to work properly:
it's enabled, there is a forum link in the "header/footer",
and there is a forum 'block', there also is the possibility
to submit forums via the submit button.
Unfortunately there is no listing of foorums here:
http://huge.cajones.org/~usura/module.php?mod=forum
but you can see a forum subject in the 'block'.
What gives ?

See Ax's small Forum HOWTO.
Working link
Looks like the url has changed, now it's over here.
