I have been intending to make the date API available to other modules (like the Calendar module) with no dependency on CCK. My next commit is going to make this change. For anyone already using the Date module, the only change will be that you need to go to the modules installation page and install the Date API module as well as the Date module.

This change has now been committed. From this point forward you'll need to enable both the date module and the date api module (both are in the date module package).
