Forgive me for my lack of knowledge of PHP, I just started running a site this morning I noticed that the release candidate supports the use of avatars, but that other than the profile page they aren't really used at all. What I'd like to do is replace the image where the "drop" image appears using the marvin theme (the black one at the head of every news posting) to be the avatar of whomever had the story posted. Is this possible, and if so, could anyone point me toward a means of implementing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated

an
an avatar is an icon or representation of a user in a shared virtual reality.. so it should only be used on the profile page ...
if you want to replace the "drop" image in the marvin theme, anyway, search for "images/drop.gif" in themes/marvin/marvin.theme and replace this with an image of your liking.
Ahh..
Well I knew that part, my idea was to associate a person's image with their post..thanks for the help though!
What I did...
What I did to get the user avatar to appear with each post is the following:
Under home --> administer --> themes -->
and then "configure" next to the theme that you have set at "default".
Once there, you can check "User pictures in posts" near the bottom.
That did the trick for me.

Hi. I've just tried this. I can't get it to work... I've set it in the global settings and overidden the theme I'm using but to no avail. If you could offer any more help that'd be great. Thanks.
Default theme?
Are you using a default theme or one of your own? I believe a couple of the contributed themes sometimes don't incoporate everything that Drupal allows into the theme so even though Drupal gives you the option to display an avatar, the theme may not support it and you get nothing.

I'm having exactly the same problem... using the Advanced Forum module, and the avatars show in all other default themes apart from Chameleon and its child, Marvin. Nothing shows either in node nor comments.
I should say that I've tried around 15-20 different third party themes and all work fine, as well as all the other default themes supplied. Seems to me to be a base themeing issue here...
.
This post almost 4 years old. I doubt you're having the same problem considering they would have been using 4.6.
At any rate, Chameleon and Marvin are not phptemplate themes and they will not work with AF.
