Annoying problem with tables on a page on my site...

I have some tables that I am using to organize the different videos on my portfolio page. In my custom theme's style.css file I don't have any borders defined for table, tr, th, or td, however, on the page, there is a always a border at the top of the table and on the top and bottom of a th element. I asked a friend of mine who develops drupal themes and she told me to check to see if I needed to override a function in drupal.css, however, as I found out that does not exist in 5.x, so now I turn to you for help.
