Theme development

Maybe I'm not getting something but is there no inherent Drupal function that prints out a simple unordered list of my categories with links to a page displaying all nodes from that category? In Wordpress there's a simple function called "wp_list_categories" and it prints out a nested listed of all the categories on the site.

Does Drupal simply not have this? and if Drupal doesn't have it does PHPTemplate? I hate to ask but I've spent two days looking for it and it appears possible but I can't seem to find any documentation as to how.

Appreciate anyone's help.

Hi, I need to know where the div "first-time" is defined in drupal by default. I am using the garland theme, but I do not see where #first-time has it's rules laid out in any css file.

Side note: When you instal drupal you come to a page where it gives you a list of things to do. The first thing on the list is: Create frist account".

And this is what I'm after:

book listing page

On the ?q=book page that lists the books, I'd like to add "by [author], [author2] and [author3]" (depending obviously on whether there is more than one author or not).

fic "galleries"

I made some "user galleries" for art following some very comprehensive directions and thought I could adapt those to also list books that people have authored or contributed to but no such luck.
