Theme development

I hope, I found the right forum for that question.
I would like to have the user picture of the author next to the blog entries.
Can anyone give me a hint where to search for documentation about that?

I'm trying to put a new theme on the pages but it shows the following error message:

warning: opendir(sites/all/themes) [function.opendir]: failed to open dir: Permission denied in /var/www/html/companyname/includes/file.inc on line 641.

Does anyone know why my themes wouldn't be updating? I added the zen theme via ftp to my themes folder and it's not appearing. I've also tried adding the files from the Zen folder into another theme that was appearing. The Zen theme still did not render. Further, I deleted a few themes, yet they are still appearing in the list of themes.

Does anyone have any clue what's going on here?

You help is much appreciated.

Drupal newbie here, but I want the content title tags on my pages to be something OTHER than an h2 tag because h2 is also being used as the subtitle tag, as you can see here:

German / English should use garland and Arabic should use RTL-Theme
