I've been tinkering with Drupal as part of upgrading my web development skill-set for some months now. As part of the learning process (and because I wanted an editing interface to update the site easily) I've redesigned my own website to work on the Drupal platform and utilise some dynamic web features. My background is in 2d design that includes a modest amount of front-end coding experience and a rather bloody-minded approach to problem solving.
The site really revolves around the portfolio section with a few supporting pages. After tinkering with a multitude of modules on test sites I really didn't implement that many in the end. CCK and Views are at the centre of making most of the site happen with sorting and presenting content, they really are stellar modules. ImageCache and ImageCrop neatly sort out images so they fit in the design. Finally some 'fancy' trim was achieved with Lightbox to display images and views_Slideshow adding a little motion on the front page.
All of the modules were surprisingly easy to implement, as was creating a custom site. Porting static HTML layouts to make a Drupal theme proved to be straight forward after reading a few tutorials. The site utilises several custom template. Fewer could have been used but I wanted to keep flexibility for styling different sections.
This is the first Drupal site I've developed, maybe not your typical Drupal
site but then again what is. It's more of a showcase in itself for the work of an Irish artist. I hope
to add the ubercart module in the future to help the Artist sell their paintings online.
Take a look and give me some feedback if you like. www.aptdesigns.ie
I hope this is my first of many Drupal sites, I've picked out some of the main modules I've
used that may not be obvious/standard.
