Drupal is up and running but how do I ...?

Really Stupid Home Page Question

I have a site under development set up with Drupal up and running in a /drupal subdirectory.

When I straight to that subdirectory the Drupal page shows up more or less ok.

Problem is, when I go to the main site URL, I got a listing of the site index.

I set up a HTML homepage with a redirect to the Drupal directory to deal with that, but I figure there has to be a more elegant solution. I could not find it in searching the documentation and the forums.

Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks.

My professional background is distance education. For years students in distance learning complained that their classes were "faceless". That is, they wanted to be able to see the faces of the people they were conversing with online. Distance learning software reduced this feeling by giving users the ability to post their pictures in their user profiles. Indeed, one of the features I enjoy in other online communities is the ability to do precisely this, post a picture in my user profile. This eliminates the "faceless" feeling. Does anyone know of a quick way to implement this in drupal?

Hello all, things are really coming along well with my site (www.digitalstupor.com). Drupal rules!

Frontpage woes. Help needed.

I'm close to getting ulcers, so if anybody can help it is much appreciated! I have a charity site I need to get up this week so by helping you do a good deed for poor Cambodian Children! Cool, right?!

I want to do a "simple" frontpage which didn't turn out to be so simple at all. I'm using Drupal 4.63 and a modded version of the FriendsElectric theme with the same 3 col layout. I'm also using the frontpage module set to "theme", which allows the two side columns to stay the same thoughout the site. Thus, it is the middle column that needs to be fixed for the frontpage.

My problems:
I want a pretty simple layout, a grid with four cells (might be six later on). Top left should contain the latest image that has "promoted to frontpage" selected. Top right a teaser for the latest blog entry. Bottom left a list of latest stories and bottom right a list of coming events.

The image should have no author / comments / quote info what so ever. The blog entry should only have a read more. The latest stories and events should only be lists with clickable titles.

Not this:

Admin's blog – add new comment – read more – quote)

It's so damned ugly!

Now, I put this code into the front page module:

// ---- here's the site mission --- //

Clean URL doesn't work!

I have done all the steps needed.

And I have even tested the thing out by adding a RewriteRule myself to redirect rewrite.html to phpinfo.php and it is sucessful.

But all the way in Drupal admin setting whenever I try to enable clean url it reports to me my server doesn't configured to support clean url and reject my request.

So what's going on with it?

I'm using 4.6.3
