I'm having a problem to get nodes to follow the !break! command to display a short summary when trying to create a node with the CCK. This is important for various reasons, anyone who how I can get this work properly?

I am in the unenviable position of being at an organization where I have been asked to set up a server and then develop the website. I do websites, but have never done a server before. Naturally, I am a bit frustrated. So, when I actually installed an Ubuntu LAMP server that works, serves up web pages, and runs Drupal, I was pretty excited.
this is a stupid question, I know, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere. I'm trying to update my Views module to the newest 4.7 version. How exactly do I go about updating a module?
I am running PHP 4.3.9 (cli) on Centos 4 with Mysql 4.1.20 and Apache 2.0.52. I successfully installed and setup drupal. I installed the E-Commerce and its required modules. Now, as admin, when I click on Create Content and either page or story, I get a blank page and my log shows seg faults.I can do everything else in drupal and other apps run fine on the server.
Hi I apologise if there is a really obvious answer to my question or I've missed something when I've searched the forums but I have looked all over my admin panel on drupal and I can't solve this problem.
