Its time for me to get a host...

After messing around enough on my test site to get a feel for Drupal, I feel like its finally time to get a real host for this bad boy.

There are a few things that I need in this host.

1) PHPAccelator is on it
2) Unlimited free subdomains (for example, test.site.com)
3) It runs Drupal with no hitches
4) You get a free domain name upon registering

Of course I'd like to have decent space and bandwidth, but those are secondary to the requirements above.

So if anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it!

Should Drupal include a default robots.txt file?

I've always added a simple robots.txt file to my Drupal sites, since I would see 404 errors in the logs where search engines were looking for one.

Should we add a very basic robots.txt file by default? Perhaps..

Gzip or Drupal's Cache

I am designing a site for people in the developing world.

For some reason, my site breaks when I turn on BOTH drupal's cache and gzip.

Considering I can only turn one on (unless someone knows a way to fix this), which one provides the biggest benefit to load speed?

I want to search for "GD" on this site but I can't

In my new Drupal installation I get a GD error. I would like to search this site for a solution but I can't because the search engine ignores words shorter than 3 letters. Why is that? Isn't it better to have a list of common words that should be ignored? Not all short words are meaningless in a search query, I think.

Frans

Improving Drupal file handling

With the goal of creating a specification for a project to offer as part of the Summer of Code program, Dries has suggested that we discuss ways to improve Drupal's file handling capabilities. Issues include:

  • renaming files
  • browsing files
  • better integration of image nodes and image files
  • better permission control on files

Share your comments and suggestions here and I'll write up a project spec.

Drupal given the short shrift?

There is an article on Newsforge about Plone being the best enterprise CMS. Drupal and Mambo are lumped together and generally brushed aside as 'lightweight' options.

Other than one or two points, I think much of what the author touts as Plone's plus points are either already in Drupal or are being made. Any experienced drupallers (I know I am not one!) care to comment on newsforge just to set the record straight?
