drupal license and code/module/extensions availability

hi there everyone,

I am not sure if this has been discussed before, but i've noticed that some modules built on drupal are available commercially only, while some extensions are never made into the public.

can someone, particularly someone from drupal core team, explain the drupal license please.

thanks

I need a download manager module badly

with downloads categories, downloads counters, download ratings, top downloads, download descriptions, etc.
Where can I find it?

Mambo in trouble

I won't go into the details of the dispute but this dispute sure has rocked Mambo and already many sites proclaim that Mambo is dead. Mambo's loss has been Drupal's gain with users now considering Drupal instead of Mambo for future projects. A provider of Mambo components has already moved to Drupal and has posted a comparison of Mambo and Drupal. Drupal is a very competent CMS but if we are to rely on the voting at opensourcecms.com , Drupal isn't as popular as Mambo.

Is this for me? What is it about?

I have an existing site that includes an existing forum and shopping cart, etc. I am looking for an add on to allow my users to save pictures, threads and content into a folder or space that is unique to their username. I ran accross this on my cpanel and thought maybe it was what I am looking for. Is this something that will benefit me and what is its main purpose? I get more confused the more I read. Thanks in advance.

Expert Advice Required - FrontPage 2003 vs Drupal

A big howyagoin from Down Under!

Yours truly has just joined this fabulous community as of five minutes ago - after lengthy - if not exhaustive - research into the whole CMS debate, and naturally I have a somewhat complex question to ask.

Disclaimer: I sincerely hope that I am posting this in the right section! And, I apologize in advance because the message IS overly long)

Just to give you a holistic view from where I'm standing - er, sitting - my profession is Medicine. I play with computers (please note the distinct difference). In the last eight months I have learned HTML & CSS via FrontPage 2003 (courtesy of about a billion sites) because I seriously want to create/build my own writing website, which I've done with the abovementioned software. I would be considered intermediate (CSS/HTML/FP) but a very long way from expert.

I have designed my site using FP because I was referred to it by my hosting company, but I'm concerned that if I stay with FP the software/website simply will not cope with the amount of content I have, or new content that is generated by registered users. Hence why I've decided to research into CMS, which leads me to Drupal.

Now that I have designed my site using FP, how will I integrate the look and feel into Drupal? The very last thing I wish to do is loose all my hard work (3 col layout w/ header & footer based on liquid design) but then again, I don't particularly wish to learn php, either. After spending eight laborious months mastering FP/CSS/HTML I really want to get my site 'live'.
