Installing Drupal

Is it possible, if yes how can I do this?

I have searched and read the handbook and other threads but Im still confused.

What basically I did after reading the install.txt and unpacking the drupal.6.1 under DOCUMENT_ROOT are I:

The symptoms:

Could not enable modules. Pressing submit would sometimes make the change happen, sometimes not. It would work if one thing were changed more often than if 10 things were change.

Could not enable themes reliably. Sometimes submitting would cause the theme to be enabled, sometimes not.

Could not set any permissions after the 20th or so. All the permissions on the top half of the screen could be set, all the permissions on the bottom half were out of reach.

Could create posts but not edit them... most of the time.

I try drupal for the first time ...so I install the latest release 4.6.1.
I try a few modules ; they seem to work fine except the attachment module.
When uploading a file, raise the following:

* File copy failed: no directory configured, or it could not be accessed.
* Error saving upload to filestore.

I open drupal with this url:

http://www.internaldomain.;lan:8000/drupal-4.6.1/index.php

The page comes up fine. (Took a while to reach this point!)

When I click Create New Account (NB who would ever create an old account!) I get a 404, object not found. The url is

http://internaldomain.lan:8000/drupal-4.1.6/?q=user/register

I've been trying to install drupal for my website, but when i try to access the module activation page as a logged user, i get this:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare amazon_search_resturi() (previously declared in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/drupal/modules/amazontools/amazon.php4.inc:45) in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/drupal/modules/amazonsearch/amazon_search.module on line 224

What does this mean?

I thought maybe I had a drupal setup issue,
"create new account" would take forever after submission and the web page would timeout,
but checking later with admin it was in the drupal database.

The reason it timed out, the email program on server was seriously backed up because the antivirus program the server was hanging.
