How to make sidebar background color always extend to footer

I have been scouring the web for a solution to make the background color of a sidebar always extend to the footer. But none of the solutions I've found would work with the zen/SEO/screen reader-compatible structure (having the sidebars load after content). Does anyone know of an elegant way to accomplish this in a Zen theme?
