I am at a loss when trying to figure out why the first sidebar hangs below the content in IE8. It doesn't happen in IE7, 9, or 10 but unfortunately most of my client's users visit the site with IE8 :/ As you can see in the image the footer also floats to the top. It's not a CSS aggregation issue since that's turned on. I've messed with the widths of the sidebar as well as absolute positioned it.

Here's a screenshot

You can see the sidebar down at the bottom. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this out since this site is visited mostly by people using the only browser version where it's broken. I really appreciate any input. Thanks!

You forgot to add a link to your site. But I found it anyway. ;-)

When a browser runs past invalid code it tries to be forgiving interpret the page the best it can. This might explain why some versions of IE are displaying it the way you expect it to... while some are not.

When I have something that seems inexplicable like this, I always start out by validating the markup on W3C. There are some errors in your code.

Most of these errors are irrelevant to your problem like no alt tags... character reference stuff... or the stuff about light box... those don't cause this type of problem...

I suggest you resolve the issues that are related to unclosed tags. For example "No p element in scope but a p end tag seen." could be causing your problem. Even if this does not fix the problem its good to validate your code as a best practice.

Also, run your CSS through the CSS validator. The time you save might be your own :-) Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply joel. I actually ended up absolute positioning the sidebar. You're right about validating the code. I'll have to go through it. The site was converted from plain html to Drupal so I should go back through all the code. This isn't normally a problem but my client's customer's are sitting on oil fields using Windows XP.

And yes the site is at www.pfsno.com

Same problem and found it is with first or second sidebars. Tracked it down to the float and widths not being picked up correctly in the responsive CSS file for #content and .region-sidebar-first as after specifying them directly with the HTML it kind of worked (so I guess there is more that's not being picked up). More like a bug than a support request.

Failing with IE6, 7 and 8 (so far all other browsers work fine).

My site is not externally accessible. Valid HTML. There are CSS errors for the "default Zen CSS", but nothing impacting this (as far as I can tell, unless it's related to the missing boxsizing.htc?).

IE8 and below do not understand media queries. From what I can tell of your description, this is working as designed.

People having this problem, if you enable the Respond.js script on the theme settings page AND make sure CSS aggregation is turned on, that should allow IE 6-8 to respect your layout.
