Anonymous (not verified) commentedSince you uninstalled the modules there should be no reason to execute update.php. It will be as if you are installing the first time.

dave reidHuh? The 6.x-2.x should have upgraded the data for you by running update.php. Did the updates try to delete tables but the Drupal database user didn't have the proper permissions? I'm not exactly clear on what happened here.

Just got round to trying to reinstall the module and getting more details to reply.
Had a successful reinstall.
It was purely a permissions problem - yes the drupal database user did not have the correct ones - I rechecked required perms and talked to the server guys. It was the first time I'd updated a module on the live site so that's why I'd not encountered this kind of problem before.
