I noticed in the instructions that there was an XML Sitemap File sub-module in the 5.x branch of the module. I don't see that option in the latest beta on the 6.x branch. Am I missing something? Assuming that it's not there by design I was wondering if file attachment support will be reinstated at some point.

Until Google makes their own 'file sitemap' it isn't too much of a priority. I can assume if you're pointing the search engines to the pages that have the attachments, they can crawl for those files really easily.

I'll keep this as postponed until that time. :)
