I'm using the latest dev release - 7.x-2.x-dev (2011-Mär-04) - and I always get the error in dblog that says

User notice: Could not open file public://xmlsitemap/NXhscRe0440PFpI5dSznEVgmauL25KojD7u4e9aZwOM/1.xml for writing. in XMLSitemapWriter->openUri() (Zeile 38 von /var/www/live/htdocs/sites/all/modules/xmlsitemap/xmlsitemap.xmlsitemap.inc).
<(code>

I checked the directory public://xmlsitemap/NXhscRe0440PFpI5dSznEVgmauL25KojD7u4e9aZwOM and it is owned by the user and group of the apache user (www-data:www-data) and I made it chmod 777 just for testing. Still no luck. Is it possible that xmlwriter can not handle the public:// wrapper?

Are you using Windows by any chance?

No, I'm using various Linux servers, mainly Ubuntu. Sometime with a LAMP stack and more recently with Zend frameworks.

Same problem

Service unavailable (with message) Text odpovědi: XMLSitemapGenerationException: Could not open file public://xmlsitemap/NXhscRe0440PFpI5dSznEVgmauL25KojD7u4e9aZwOM/2.xml for writing. ve funkci XMLSitemapWriter->openUri() (line: 50 file /www/sites/0/site1460/public_html/sites/all/modules/xmlsitemap/xmlsitemap.xmlsitemap.inc).

On debian server, php 5.2.

Altering path to correct uri in xmlsitemap.xmlsitemap.inc line 40 doesn't work.
