I'd like to have a "forum" category added for modules that replicate functionality found in stand alone forum software. I've been assembling a list but a tag would be much more dynamic and also not be hidden away in the handbook when people are looking to download.
I am volunteering to go through the projects and add the new tag so it will be useful right off the bat.
Thanks,
Michelle

gregglesHere are the modules which I'd say really really fall into that category:
Comment Mover
Flatcomment
Forum Access
Quote
Smileys
Signatures for Forums
User Badges
Advanced Forum
The others may be nice for some forums but not all. There's probably some other modules which fall into this that will crop up after it's been created. That seems like a sufficiently large list of modules to me that we should create this. I can do this and am willing to but want to give it at least 24 hours for others to speak up.

michelleI think we should pin down how we're going to define this. I was going by the definition of things found in stand alone forums. The reason I went with that is that someone looking to replace, say, phpbb, with Drupal's forum is going to want all the functionality they had. But going this route ends up with some things that Drupal folks don't typically think of as a "forum module". Say, privatemsg, for example. It's a fuzzy line because so many Drupal modules that are useful in the forums are useful in other places as well. And we want to avoid duplicating the "community" category by being too broad.
So we can go two routes on this:
1) Run down the feature lists of popular forum software and include every module that ticks a feature off this list. This was my original intent but does run the danger of making this catagory too broad.
2) Stick to modules that are solely or primarily for forum use which would be your list plus a few more. This keeps the category narrowly focused but leaves out modules that people coming from stand alone software would expect to find. This can be augmented with a handbook page but that isn't terribly visible unless there's some way to link to it from the category page.
I'm ok going either way on this. I just want to make sure we're in agreement before I go tagging modules.

michelleFor reference, this is something I've been thinking about asking to have added for a while but what pushed me to actually file the issue was this discussion. Though I don't agree that everything should be shoved in core forum, I can understand that assembling a complete forum can be daunting if you're not familiar with the available modules and hope this tag will make that easier for people.

avpadernoIs there still interest in adding this category?

michelleI don't think it's really needed anymore. The next step should be to move to an install profiles or a Features set or something like that.
