This post has triggered an idea i had floating around a while already.

"what about removing the whole weblink navigation"?
A lot of people seem to be not too happy wih the way it looks, feels and acts. But more important: I am convinced that navigating should be handled by navigation modules, and content should be handled by content modules.
So all I would like to do, is bring the weblinks module back to its basics: managing weblinks. That would mean adding, removing, checking, counting etc.

Mixed. What do you propse for administering them instead?

I didn't even realize that that was there. Kind of nice seeing the 'hit' count on the links. I have mixed feelings about removing though. Primarily because it allows you to scroll through and quickly determine what node a link is. Other than scrolling through the Content section our a taxonomy menu, how else do you propose accesing them for maintenence.

I have been using them for the node:## feature in my various postings I am experimenting with.

I beleive your concern is no real reason for not removing the weblink navigation, but rather a proof that the UI for administrating content needs work. This patch already does some work on it: http://drupal.org/node/view/10296

I am going to make a general directory.module, one that will replace the weblink browsing functionality.
