This module doesn't work without nodereference, but does not list it as a dependency. You get a call to undefined function error if you try to use it without nodereference enabled.

The issue is what happens if nodereference is not enabled. The above patch doesn't address that. What needs to be done is that dependencies[] = nodereference must be added to the .info file.
