i install the module, set up he folders in files, go to webfm settings and cannot create a directory of any kind. If I click Make directory the, an error displays: mkdir fail.
Do I have to set specific permissions to use the fm or why could there be this error?

nitram079 commentedWhen I go back to the regular admin menu it displays
illegal name for ftp root directory
on the top

robmilne commentedPlease follow the instructions in the README.txt file. Depending on the server settings a 777 permissions might be required to the root directories. The illegal ftp dir error message means that the ftp root dir is inside (or the same as) the webfm root dir - This isn't permitted since one area is controlled by the database, the other isn't.

mlarson154 commentedI have tried to set all my folders in my site to 775 without any success. I still get "mkdir fail" in webFM.
I guess I don't understand which folders need permission setting. I don't have access to my root folder itself. Where do I have to set these permissions?
mlarson154 commentedLet me clarify that I have been able to change the permissions to 775 and 777, but it hasn't fixed the problem.
mlarson154 commentedNever mind. I finally figured it out. I might suggest that the README.txt file needs to have its syntax updated for Drupal 5.
Installation Section
It makes mention of "admin/settings/webfm". This is actually "Administer/Site configuration/Webfm Settings".
Configuration Section
It says that you should create two directories in the 'File system path' directory. It should be understood that this is the "/files" folder.
"admin/access" is actually "Administer/User management/Access control".
I hope this helps others who are thrown off by the terminology.

robmilne commentedI apologize for my less than stellar technical writing skill. It is difficult to have an outside perspective when one is so close to the code. I will try to revise the README for the next release.
j-clark commentedFor what it is worth when revising the README I had the same problem in understanding.
The issue is that for a noob it's not obvious that "admin/settings/file-system" refers to a menu hierarchy rather than a filesystem path, especially when it's actually "Administer › Site configuration › File system"

robmilne commentedI've updated the README again for the Oct3 dev release
