I hope that this project isn't dead. Wave maintainership has been transfered to Apache(http://incubator.apache.org/wave/) & thats where the development will continue. Wave is now an opensource project & one of the sub-projects is Wave in a Box(http://demo.wave-in-a-box.org/), a stand alone wave server and rich web client that can serve as a Wave reference implementation.

JayKayAu commentedLikewise.
I suspect that I'm not unusual in thinking that Wave has gigantic potential, but may have come out before its time.
So, people are probably playing wait-and-see to see if anything interesting and solid pops out of the incubator. When that happens, it may be time to focus on how to cement that into Drupal.
OTOH, I haven't thought about it too much. If you can see a way of moving forward with it, then go ahead!

kbell commentedI was a co-maintainer on this project in the beginning, but I quit due to lack of audience interest. The thing is, the Drupal 7 methods of using media "stream wrappers" kind of makes this modules obsolete in its original intended form. And I believe someone has already made the media plugin that is for "wrapping" Waves, rendering this module no longer useful in terms of having a future. It's only possible value would be as a Drupal 6 module, and few people want to develop for an obsolete system. Just my two cents. As my esteemed p=colleague preciously stated, if you want to continue working on it, by all means you should do. I'm sure some people will want it.
Interesting discussion here as well: http://groups.drupal.org/node/136534

Yes wave has huge potential & can be quite flexible. If there was a way to manage & treat waves as nodes that would be awesome. Maybe it can be an entity.
@kebell
Maybe there can be a rewrite. Many modules are undergoing rewrites for the purpose of taking advantage of Drupal 7's new features. I am not a developer myself, so there isnt much i can do with it, but I can definitely offer some insight on how it can be used. I have been following the Wave project quite closely.
