This is a great plug-in, as the grid AND the random function are a great and very useful combination.

Views Slideshow has a new version out since Oct 26, 2011 based on the jquery cycle library.

Would it be possible to introduce the ability to play (optionally random) slideshows in the grid?

I.e. instead of calling random static elements, would it be possible to call random slideshows into the grid (with the option to set or randomize timer delay, transition speed, and offset). These random slideshows would be, of course, all the same slideshow (i.e. based on the same elements) but duplicated and randomized throughout the grid.

Please let me know, I would be happy to help as much as possible.

AFAIK there should be no problem on doing that using http://drupal.org/project/viewfield and views slideshow.

Could you try and tell?

I tried, but I cannot create a grid with it that has each slideshow start at a different time, as all slideshow in a column start at the same time.

This has to do with the settings in views slideshow. Try to add a differnt initial delay to each slideshow.
