When I use this module to assign give a user permission to view unpublished content, they are able to access the nodes themselves (though without the pink "unpublished" background that is default), they were not able to see the nodes available to them under "find content". All unpublished nodes were unavailable from this view.

In the permissions, do you have 'View own unpublished content' enabled? This is under the Node section.

What you are describing is most likely this issue - #1192074: Respect View_Unpublished permissions on the Content overview page
Update to --dev version for that patch.

So marking this as duplicate and closing it...
