I am planning to use varbase for my future project as it is the best general purpose distribution I have found to date. My next project is an eCommerce store/website using drupal commerce modules. However I am not sure if it is easily and practically possible to build a drupal commerce store on top of varbase so that I am able to use all the good features of varbase along with commerce modules. Is it possible? If it is then would it involve merely adding commerce module to varbase using composer and configuring them OR something else like sub-profile etc. How will the varbase-updater script work in this regard?

For folks interested in this topic, the answer is:

We’ve built several websites that has ecommerce component using Drupal Commerce 2.0. Whether for physical or virtual products, you can simply download and install Varbase and just require the Commerce suite in your project’s composer.
Configure and develop as you go.
